DISCOVER THE FIGHTER INSIDE OF YOU…

From history to now, fencing is romantic, quick and exciting. No matter the level or age anyone can begin and achieve a level of success. Fencing is a dance, a duel and a sparring match all rolled into one. The art of fencing, if you think of it, can easily be applied to life.

Benefits of Fencing

Fencing offers people many benefits beyond being a good health and fitness routine.

Because various levels train together, it gives fencers an opportunity to meet many different types of people, whether age, level, ability or length of time fencing.

This sport activates the mind. Sparing and matches are as much about strategy as ability. It requires a strong connection between mind and body, and the mind is always looking ahead to the next possible movement. It is constantly trying to solve the next possible strike.

Being a form of exercise, it of course builds muscle and burns calories. However, it also increases agility and flexibility much more than other sports.

Because of this, fencing increases focus and concentration. Both are needed in order to be successful.

It offers a wide variety of competition, from training pairs to world championships and the Olympics. There is something for everyone.

About

About Me

Alex Bela has been a fencer for over 20 years and a coach for more than 10. His career has taken him from winning the Romanian National Championships to coaching top junior and senior fencers from the UK at European and World Championships.

As a fencer, he was part of the Romanian National Squad for more than 10 years and has been competing during this time at several world cups and grand prix. Also, he has been taking part at junior and senior European and World Championships.

As a fencing master, Alex started coaching at Cambridge University in 2013, one of the most famous and prestigious universities in the world. In 2015 and 2016 Alex lead his Cambridge fencers to win the university national championship title.

Alex coached several UK fencers and achieved medals and podiums at national and international events. In 2018, Alex’s top fencer Ian Ren won the silver medal at the Cadet European Championships and at the end of the season he finished ranked 1st in the world U17 rankings. That was the only medal that a British sabre male fencer has won in the last 20 years at a major international event.

“Coach Bela” knows that the future of sabre fencing in this country depends on strong youth programs in all the fencing clubs. That’s why he enjoys working with beginner fencers as much as teaching the advanced competitive classes.

For Alex, being a fencing coach means much more than simply teaching fencing moves:

“We can say that we don’t teach people how to fence in our sessions, we teach people how to be fencers, which is a much, much higher category.”

Private Lessons

“Will private lessons make a significant difference?”

This is a question I get asked a lot by people, but there is no general, one-size-fits-all answer. The short answer is yes, private lessons will make a very significant difference. That said, there are many factors to consider before committing to private lessons. They require effort, time, commitment, money, and an idea of the desired outcome.

Getting one-on-one attention will show you the correct way to handle the sabre to give yourself the highest advantage. During one-on-one lessons coaches will also give you individualized exercises and drills that will strengthen the muscles you need to excel in fencing.

In a private lesson, a fencer and coach can work on the tiny details of each technical element: from the simple basics such as a straight touch to more advanced combinations of complex movements such as multiple parries and attacks. All these elements are executed in private lessons over and over again and again until they are a natural part of the student’s repertoire.

Fencing In Schools

We offer group fencing sessions for girls and boys aged 5+ to learn fencing in schools, either as part of the school day in a regular PE session, or as an after-school activity/club.

All of our coaches working with children have an up-to-date DBS disclosure, plenty of experience, and the children are supervised at all times. Sessions are safe and fun, and are led by our team of international fencing coaches.

We recommend groups of up to 12 children of a similar age. If your school has a sports hall, you might be able to have a larger group which will reduce costs per child.

Sessions include fencing-related games and activities, and explanation of basic fencing techniques. The main target is to let the children have a go themselves

No previous experience is required, and children just need to wear trainers, a t-shirt, and tracksuit bottoms. All of the fencing kit/equipment is provided by us.

Sessions typically last one hour, but we can arrange these to suit your needs. We invoice the school directly, and do not take payments from parents.

Usually the cost per child would be in the region of £6-10 per session. Smaller groups might result in higher costs per child.

Corporate Events

Corporate fencing events are great for team-building or energizing and motivating your staff. Our fencing events are highly enjoyable, safe and professional and are led by our team of international coaches.

Your session includes a brief history of fencing, safety briefing, warm-up session, demonstration and an explanation of basic fencing techniques.

You’ll learn basic fencing techniques, and then you’ll have a go yourselves! We tailor sessions to your specific needs and work with you to create an amazing, fun fencing experience.

No previous experience is required and you’ll just need to wear trainers, a t-shirt, and tracksuit bottoms (shorts not allowed). All other fencing equipment is provided (mask, jacket, under-jacket, glove, weapon).

Maximum group size is approximately 20 people, and sessions last around 2 hours, but we can tailor to suit your requirements. Prices start at £10/hour per person.

We provide everything you need, and your session can be arranged at a time to suit you, subject to availability (early booking is strongly advised). We can invoice your company if needed, and we hold public liability insurance.

We can arrange for the event to be held in our venue (Leon Paul Fencing Centre) or if you already have a venue suitable for fencing (e.g 2 badminton courts in a sports hall) we will bring all the fencing kit over there.
